I am currently going through this for the third time, and each time I’ve had different needs for my pregnancy wardrove. It can be expensive having to purchase new clothes for such a short amount of time. Enter the capsule wardrobe: a minimalist approach to dressing that focuses on versatility and simplicity. Here’s how to create a minimal capsule wardrobe during pregnancy that keeps you comfortable and stylish without overwhelming your closet or your finances.
1. Assess Your Needs and Lifestyle

Do you need formal attire, or can you stick to casual wear? Understanding your needs will help you select pieces that are versatile and functional. For me, as much as I’d love to say I dress nicely each day, as a stay-at-home mom my daily outfits generally consist of loungewear and athletic wear, so my maternity clothes reflect this.

This will ensure that your wardrobe remains versatile and timeless. It also ups the amount of outfit choices you have as you can make multiple different outfits by mixing and matching the items.

Focus on purchasing a few high-quality items that will form the foundation of your wardrobe. To clarify, this does not mean they need to be expensive! They just need to be quality fabrics that will last through the few months when you need them. These should be versatile and comfortable:
- Maternity Jeans: A good pair of maternity jeans is a must. Look for a pair with a stretchy waistband that can accommodate your growing belly.
- Leggings: Maternity leggings are incredibly comfortable and can be dressed up or down. These are my favorite leggings that I wear pretty much every day. I currently have the shorts version because it’s so hot out where I live, but I love the long version just as much and they are great for the colder months.
- Basic Tops: Invest in a few basic tops that you can layer. Look for soft, stretchy fabrics. I like a mix of form-fitting and loose tops.
- Maternity Dress: A simple, versatile dress can be worn for various occasions. Choose one that can be dressed up with accessories or kept casual. I have a few loose dresses that I love and can continue to wear during pregnancy, so keep in mind you may not even need to buy new! I did add one dress to my collection and that is the Skims Long Slip Dress. It is so stretchy that it works so well with a growing bump.
- Outerwear: Depending on the season, you may need a maternity coat or a light jacket. I’ve been able to make do with my non-maternity coats in my past pregnancies, so this is a preference thing and not a necessity.
