Budget Friendly Bathroom Makeover

When we first moved into our ranch house, just about everything was functional. It was not a fixer-upper by any means, so all things we decided to change were purely cosmetic. This was great for us as we were first time home buyers and on a very, very, small budget. Unfortunately for me, I have always had high-price taste on a small budget, haha! Because of this, I have had to learn to become creative with my home makeover dreams and scale down my big plans for reasonable, small cosmetic changes.

To start, we only have one bathroom in our house. And it’s small. When we moved in the walls were a yellow color with laminate flooring. There was a vanity but it was ugly and installed in a strange way, so it moved around if you pushed on it or bumped into it. Things in the room were there for functionality but not beauty. Here is a photo of the bathroom when we moved in.

Nothing out of the ordinary or terrible, but not my “style” that I was dreaming of when thinking up how I wanted our first house to look.

The first thing we did was pull out the laminate flooring. I picked out an affordable white tile from Home Depot. You can find the tile we used here. Our bathroom is very small, so we did not need much tile to get the floor done. We also went with a pure white grout. One of the only other major changes we made was the sink. The vanity that was there felt cheap to me and took a good amount of foot space away which made the bathroom feel cramped (since it’s already such a small room). I chose a super simple and affordable option from Home Depot, which you can find a very similar version here.

Above is a photo during the tile install process. Our time each day was limited so we did have to break up the project into a few different days. We completed the tile in about four different quadrants. If I did it again I would not do this and would make sure to be able to complete it all in one day. The reason for this is that I do notice some differences in the grout work due to different batches and timing of the grout. Otherwise, it was fine, and a bit necessary to keep our only bathroom usable during the process.
This picture really shows just how small the bathroom is and how little space we are working with in the room. Simplicity really is key because of the lack of space. Once the flooring was done, we replaced the toilet and the vanity with the pedestal sink. I kept the same medicine cabinet, so no change there. Because of the vanity there was missing wall tile where it was. For a few different reasons, we decided to hold off on tiling the area behind the sink. These reasons were that we needed the space to be up and running as soon as possible, and I know that ultimately I’d like to rip out all of the wall tile in the future, so there is no point in adding to what will eventually be removed.

We painted the walls and trim the same white we used in the rest of the house, which is Sherwin Williams Snowbound. We used semi-gloss on the trim and eggshell on the walls.

I added a few simple wall hooks for towels as well as a small, simple shelf for our most used items. As this is the first iteration of the bathroom makeover, we are super happy with the results. The budget was tight, but we did what we could by spending a minimal amount of money this time. In the future we plan to fully renovate this space. That would include removing the shower insert, tiling the shower walls, replacing the wall tile with beadboard, and re-tiling the floor with a larger size and darker color tile.

For now, we are super happy with the changes and it suits our needs!
